Sleep study is an examination, which measures various body functions simultaneously during the patient’s sleep. The result is called a polysomnogram. This examination investigates the cause of a sleep disorder.
Indication
A sleep study can be used in people who suffer from snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness and sleep associated with epileptic seizures.
Working
The patient is admitted and receives electrodes, which are pasted onto the head, chin, chest, leg and eyes. These electrodes register the brains and heart activity. The patient also gets a microphone pasted to record the snoring. The respiration is checked by a nasal cannula and elastic straps around the chest and abdomen. Finally, a clip/patch around the finger measures the oxygen content of the blood.
